ProGen Study Groups Sponsored Breakfast

New to the conference schedule this year are breakfast buffets on Thursday morning, May 9th at 7:00a.m. One of these breakfasts is sponsored by the ProGen Study Program and will provide an opportunity for prospective students, current participants, alumni, and mentors of the study program to network together. All are welcome to attend.


The ProGen Study Program is made of up twenty online groups studying Professional Genealogy: A Manual for Researchers, Writers, Editors, Lecturers and Librarians, edited by Elizabeth Shown Mills. Participants work together in this collaborative program to develop professional genealogy research, writing, and business skills.

If you are thinking of transitioning from genealogy hobbyist to professional, then come and network with the program participants and alumni. Program administrator Angela Packer McGhie will be at the breakfast to:

• Give an overview of the ProGen Study Program

• Answer questions from prospective students

• Recognize the board-certified genealogists who serve as mentors to the groups

• Introduce recent graduates of the program and recently board-certified members

Let’s face it: we Americans are a mouthy bunch, and telling politicians what to do is one of the great American sports. We’ve been at it since colonial days, and in “‘To the Honorable, the General Assembly’: The Treasure Trove in Legislative Petitions,” you’ll see the genealogical goodies that can be found in legislative petitions.

It’s fun! Really!

In “Blackguards and Black Sheep: The Lighter Side of the Law,” the BCG Luncheon on Thursday, you’ll see that no, actually, our ancestors really didn’t behave better than folks do today. And for sheer entertainment, there’s nothing like the records of ancestors behaving badly.

(I told you it was fun.)

Then in “From Blackstone to the Statutes at Large—How Knowing the Law Makes Us Better Genealogists,” you’ll find out how the law affected genealogical records, and how today it affects how we do genealogy: how we access records and places like cemeteries.

What does the future hold for genealogy and genealogists? "Beyond the barricade is there a world you long to see?" Come prepared for audience participation.

We received a message from the Ancestry Insider about his luncheon presentation and this is what he had to say:

                        “You would like me to speak at a luncheon? Wow. The food had better
                        be good. Maybe conference organizers are desperate. Or maybe they know
                        something about the future that I don’t.

                        Say, what about the future? Was Thomas Jefferson talking about genealogists
                        when he said, 'I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past'?
                        Well, well, Mr. President, genealogists can do both; thank you very much. I
                        can dream about the future every bit as well as the next yellow, fictional blog
                        writer. Now I know very well that what they say about me might be true uhhh…
                        might not be true. They say I know less than I think and I think less than I
                        know. So when it comes to predicting the future, I might need your help.
                        Maybe I’ll use the 'we is better than me' principle.

                        While Jefferson missed the mark, Yogi Berra hit it square. 'The future ain’t
                        what it used to be.' Come help me predict the future of genealogy."

Hall-Patton is the hatted and bearded authenticator for the History Channel’s reality-television show, Pawn Stars, and is the Museums Administrator for the Clark County museum system.

Next, Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak will briefly share highlights from her thirteen-year-old monthly grant awards program in “Lucky 13: A Modest Proposal Regarding Genealogy Grants and Pawn Stores.”

Megan is a popular writer, speaker, and TV guest. She has appeared on Good Morning America, the Today show and on CNN, NPR, and the BBC.
