Mariachi Los Bravos Leads Attendees from Opening Session to the Exhibit Hall
Since it’s inception in 2002, the Mariachi program at J.D. Smith Middle School has grown to over 300 students, making it one of the more popular programs at our school and in the Las Vegas Valley
The school’s performing ensemble, Mariachi Los Bravos, is an audition-based ensemble. Aside from being enrolled in a mariachi class during the school day, this select group of students also dedicate themselves to 4 hours of after-school rehearsals every week. The students who make-up Mariachi Los Bravos are also required to maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA in all academic classes and Outstanding marks in citizenship.
Maraichi Los Bravos continuously strives to set the standard for middle school mariachi ensembles in CCSD. On average, Los Bravos performs 15-20 times throughout the nine-month school year. Our performances vary from school functions and fundraisers, to community and charity concerts and festivals. In 2009, Mariachi Los Bravos earned its very first Superior rating at the annual CCSD Mariachi Festival. Members of Mariachi Los Bravos also represent J. D. Smith yearly in the CCSD Honor and All-City Mariachis. For the very first time last year, Mariachi Los Bravos also auditioned for and earned the right to perform a 30-minute concert inside of Disneyland theme park in California.
Since 2005, the Mariachi Los Bravos has been under the direction of Daniel Gonzales and Thomas Garibay. It is their leadership as well as the dedication, devotion, and passion of the students that continues to make Mariachi Los Bravos one of the premier mariachi ensembles in the Clark County School District.
